Astonished by Light gathers E. Fielder’s poems after the Voyager Golden Record. They move from a solitary night in New Mexico through St Petersburg, Beijing, a Cornish harbour, a bar on the bayou, and the slag heaps of Bethlehem Steel. Fielder writes through the passage of carbon from dying stars into human cells, and Voyager’s own drift into the dark beside grief, the illness of someone loved, queer desire, and war, holding cosmic scale and intimate loss in one restless lyric voice. The result is a fuller portrait of Earth than the golden disc ever carried, sent outward to whoever might be listening.
