The Radiant Ordinary, edited by Gavin Goodwin, celebrates the poet John Freeman, whose work has pursued across more than five decades the illumination latent in ordinary experience. Goodwin's account of Freeman's formation, from a chance discovery of William Carlos Williams in a Charing Cross bookshop to his correspondence with the Objectivists, anchors a gathering of essays, close readings, and poems in which criticism repeatedly shades into gratitude. Scholars, fellow poets, and long-standing friends consider a body of work whose conversational plainness is carried on long, patient sentences, attentive to unregarded lives and everyday kindness, and to a natural world that is never mere backdrop. What emerges is both study and portrait: an account of a poetry that renews perception of what daily life contains.
 
ABOUT John Freeman & Gavin Goodwin:
John Freeman has published twelve collections of poetry, the most recent of which is Plato’s Peach (Worple Press, 2021). What Possessed Me (Worple, 2016) won the poetry section of the Wales Book of the Year award. He has written articles on modern poetry, some of which were collected in The Less Received: Neglected Modern Poets (Stride Editions, 2000), and on Shelley. For many years he taught English Literature and Creative Writing at Cardiff University.
